Nokia N97 Review

Available in Black or White, the N97 is more a mobile computer than a mobile phone. Packed with every imaginable feature, Nokia's designers have succeeded in creating a device that is supremely powerful yet easy to use, with a user-friendly touchscreen and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. With music, video, photos, email, web and downloadable apps all easily accessible from the customisable home page, the N97 delivers everything that we could ask for on the move. Big, heavy and expensive, but just about worth it!

The N97 is much more than an enhanced N96 - it has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a touchscreen display. Other features include a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, GPS, WiFi and 32GB memory. Nokia claim that it is the "most powerful, multi-sensory mobile computer in existence". Throw away your laptops, guys, the N97 is here!
There are so many touchscreen phones on the market these days, it's tempting to think that they are all the same. But the Nokia N97 does offer more than most. Nokia seem to be positioning the N97 less like a mobile phone and more like a handheld computer. Although at Mobile Phones UK, we tend to be sceptical about a lot of stuff, we're actually genuinely impressed by the N97 design concept. The N97 has both a touchscreen and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The keyboard makes typing fast and easy, and we definitely prefer this to a virtual keyboard (although it isn't the best keyboard ever - it's too wide for comfort, and the space key is in the wrong place.) Whether it's texting, e-mailing or writing notes, the QWERTY keyboard makes things possible that we simply wouldn't have bothered to attempt on an old-style mobile. But it's the touchscreen that will demand most of your attention. The screen measures 3.5 inches across, which makes it the same as the Apple iPhone 3G S, but it has a higher resolution than the iPhone, at a massive 640 x 360 pixels. With this resolution, there are almost as many pixels on this pocket-sized device as there were on early personal computers. And that makes it possible to start thinking about the N97 as if it were a handheld PC, which is exactly what the engineers at Nokia have done. The touchscreen is of resistive type, similar to the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, not quite up to iPhone standards, but pretty slick nonetheless. It's not quite as responsive as the best of the best, and the menus are sometimes slow to respond - typical of previous Nseries phones. The biggest problem is that the user interface feels like it's Symbian with touchscreen functionality bolted on - which is exactly what it is - rather than a native touchscreen OS such as Android, Windows Mobile or Apple's OS X.
The home screen of the phone is information-packed and fully customisable. You can simultaneously view the date & time, your inbox, the weather forecast, RSS feeds, Facebook and quick links to your favourite web pages. This is similar to Samsung's widget interface appearing on phones like the Samsung Jet and the i8910 HD. Touch a web icon and web pages open up in their full glory, with easy touch controls to scroll and zoom. There's full support for Flash videos as well. It's the mobile internet as it should be, and once you've experienced it you won't want to go back to how things used to be. The internet is fast too, either using the 3G HSDPA connection, and even faster is the WiFi connection, where it's available.
The N97 has a built-in GPS receiver, and you can use this to find your location, to geo-tag photos and to navigate. Nokia Maps is supplied, plus multimedia city guides and there's a built-in compass feature too. A 3-month trial licence for pedestrian and voice-guided drive navigation software is included.
The N97 has plenty of custom apps available too. Built on the mature Symbian operating system, there are plenty of apps that will be suitable for the N97, and you can download applications, games, videos and content through Nokia's Ovi store.
Nokia haven't taken this opportunity to upgrade their camera though. It's the same old 5 megapixel camera that appeared in the Nokia N96. But that's not a complaint - the camera is a good one, with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus and a dual LED flash.
The N97 really is a feature-packed phone. It's much more like a laptop in terms of its capabilities. We're not going to list everything that it does, because the list would be too long! See the detailed spec below for further info. Suffice to say that it can handle pretty much any kind of media and communications that you can think of. With its close integration with the internet, it feels very much like the 21st century has arrived. We just want to mention the enormous 32GB of onboard memory, plus the ability to increase this with a 16GB memory card.
Nokia's battery life figures are very impressive when you consider what this device is capable of. With 6 hours of talktime on a 3G network and up to 430 minutes of standby, this is as much as we could have hoped for. We don't yet have any real world data on this, but hopefully our user reviews below will help to clarify this.
Finally, we have to comment on the size of the device. Yes, it's big, but what did you expect? It's heavy too, but there's a lot of stuff inside! This is a phone that does its best to pack in every feature that users might want, and we think that it's succeeded. Is it the best phone ever? It's probably Nokia's best phone, but at its heart the Symbian operating system feels just a little dated compared to the slickness and speed of the iPhone, or the power of Windows Mobile phones such as the HTC Touch HD or Samsung Omnia. We would definitely recommend the N97 for Nokia fans looking for an upgrade, but fans of other smartphone operating systems will probably prefer to stick to what they know.
How to rate the N97? Although it isn't perfect in every way, no phone that we've reviewed ever has been. It would be mean not to award 5 stars for such an amazing phone. The truth is that we give it 4.5 stars.

LG KP500/KP501 Cookie

In a nutshell: The LG KP500 is a touchscreen phone for those on a budget. It's a compact device but with a large touchscreen display that's easy and fun to use. With a 3.2 megapixel camera, a media player, an FM radio, Bluetooth wireless connectivity and a memory card slot, this phone has all the essentials. Although it misses out on 3G and a top class camera, it has most features that most people will want, and for the money you'd be hard pressed to find anything better than this! Now available in Pink!

The LG KP500 is nicknamed the Cookie. It's billed as an affordable touchscreen phone and in fact there are some amazing deals out there to tempt you. But before you rush off to buy one, join us in a tour of the Cookie, and let's find out what's missing compared to the more expensive rival touchscreen phones.
Let's start by looking at what you do get. You get a genuine touchscreen-driven phone (not just one with touch-sensitive buttons) that is controlled by pressing virtual buttons and icons with your finger or the stylus that's supplied with the phone. Pioneered by the iPhone (and others), touchscreen is the hottest trend in mobile phones in 2008, and it's hard to underestimate the amount of fun that you can have pressing virtual buttons on a screen. Especially for people like us, who don't get out enough. In the early days touchscreen phones were often tricky to use, but these days they're all pretty easy once you've got used to them. We don't think that the Cookie will pose any trouble, although some may find the stylus a nuisance. Anyway, great fun to use! The KP500 also has a built-in accelerometer, which simply means that it senses which way is up and automatically rotates the display. The virtual QWERTY keyboard slides into view when you turn the phone to landscape mode, which looks very cool. The accelerometer is also used when playing games, so you can tilt and turn the phone Wii-style to control movement. You can shake and flip the phone at other times to control various functions. It's all great fun, as long as you don't mind being stared at by passers-by.
The Cookie is more compact than most touchphones. It's about 20% smaller than the iPhone 3G and several millimetres thinner than its big brother, the LG Renoir. And weighing just 89g, it's probably the lightest touchscreen phone ever. We can't think of any lighter ones off the top of our head anyway. But, and this bit is important, LG have cleverly made the phone smaller without reducing the size of the screen. At 3 inches across, it's a big display by any standards, and when it comes to touchscreen, size really does matter! A bigger screen makes it easier to use, and the Cookie is definitely an easy phone to use.
So, the ergonomics are good, and the screen is good. What else is good? Well, it has a media player that plays most popular digital music formats. It also has a stereo FM radio. It's got a good web browser. It supports email and has a document viewer installed. Connectivity includes USB and Bluetooth, and the operating frequency is quadband GSM, so you should be able to use the phone anywhere in the world.
Now let's take a look at what's missing.
The camera is not as good as the 5 or 8 megapixel cameras seen in LG's high-end phones. It's limited to 3.2 megapixels, and there's no autofocus but this is reasonable when you consider the price. The memory is also more limited at 48 MB, although you can add a microSD memory card to bring this up to 8GB. It's not 3G and there's no WiFi, so web browsing probably isn't a good option, despite the big screen, which is a shame.
Inevitably there are trade-offs between price and features. We feel that LG have got the balance just right with the Cookie. By removing the features that most people won't miss, and by installing an average camera, they've not only slashed the cost, but have also made the phone more compact and easier to use in many ways. As long as you won't miss high speed web browsing or the camera quality, you can have all the benefits of the latest touchscreen phones for a fraction of the cost. For example, on contract you can expect to get the LG KP500 with half-price line rental for the duration of the contract, or a freebie such as a Nintendo Wii Fit, an XBOX 360 or even a couple of hundred quid cashback! With deals this generous, it's very hard to find fault with the Cookie.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

The 5800, Nokia's first touchscreen phone, has video, music and GPS features to get the heart racing, but these are offset by a disappointing touch experience. While there's nothing outrageously wrong with the 5800, we're sure Nokia has better touchscreens to come

What is it?
Touchscreen music phone

What we think:
It's got some great features, but the touchscreen could be improved

We like:
Wi-Fi; HSDPA; GPS

We don't like:
Sometimes unresponsive touchscreen; mundane design

Nokia E63

The E63 smart phone, a less expensive version of the E71, offers a wide screen and full, easy-to-press Qwerty keypad in a more colourful, chunkier case. Despite lacking the E71's HSDPA and GPS, the E63 offers a good Web experience, and is a great device for texting and sending emails

What is it?
Smart phone with full Qwerty keypad

What we think:
Chunkier than the E71, the E63 doesn't have as many features, and lacks its predecessor's finesse

We like:
Qwerty keypad; Wi-Fi

We don't like:
Lack of HSDPA and GPS

Nokia 7210 Supernova

The slim, colourful 7210 Supernova is about as simple a phone as you can get nowadays. It supports a good range of music formats and we're fans of the Flickr uploading feature, but it's pricey for an unsophisticated handset. For those seeking a basic camera phone, though, it's worth a look

What is it?
Basic camera phone with Flickr uploader app

What we think:
Slim but underwhelming handset whose basic features don't support its price tag

We like:
Flickr uploader application; expandable microSD memory; supports multiple music formats

We don't like:
Flimsy appearance; flat buttons; screen's low colour depth; poor photo and video quality

Accessories:
MicroSD memory card; Nokia data cable

Nokia expands the E-series with Nokia E52

Nokia today revealed the Nokia E52 with focus on battery performance, GPS, noise cancellation and high speed HSDPA

Nokia E52 battery performance is said to have up to eight hours before charging is necessary. The promisse is not outstanding as many recent models have specifications where talk time is over 10 hours. What could be interesting is if the promissed talk time turns out to be true. Talk time is 23 days.

Sony Ericsson announced the T715 slider phone with a 2.2 inch display and 3.2 megapixel camera

The Sony Ericsson T715 has support for microSD memory card following the trend started by the recently announced Sony Ericsson Satio, Aino and Yari models to not use Memory Stick cards. The T715 are bringing us back to the old name strategy where consumers knowing the Sony Ericsson mobile phone range should be able to place the 715 high up in the T-series. The Sony Ericsson web site compares the phone with F305, Naite and T280 which are considered low- to mid-end models. The final retail price for T715 is currently not known.

Sony Ericsson emphasize the following for T715

  • Elegant and compact slider

  • Large keypad and font size

  • 3G network connection

  • Large 2.2 inch screen

  • Smart desktop and birthday reminders

  • 3.2 megapixel camera with photo light

The display are claimed to have good readability even in direct sunligh. This is of course a feature we should expect from every mobile phone.
