Description: The Web made faster, safer, and easier via the search engine titan's new Google technology-powered Web browser
Platforms: Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 7
Company: Google Inc. - About Google Chrome
Status: Free beta release. Latest official release - v1.0.154.42 - also available

Google Chrome represents Google's initial attempt to deliver a Web Browser that combines a minimal design with advanced technology from the search engine titan to make the Web "faster, safer, and easier." Google Chrome's engine is largely based on Mozilla Firefox but the browser offers a completely different look from Firefox.

Google users 'more loyal' than other search engine users

nternet users who favour Google's search engine also perform more searches than users who prefer Yahoo!'s and Microsoft's search tools

Internet users who favour Google's search engine perform more searches per month than users who prefer Yahoo!'s and Microsoft's search tools

Google users perform an average of 54.5 searches a month according to the latest figures from comScore, more than double the combined number of searches made by Yahoo! and Microsoft search users.

Google users are also the most loyal, making nearly 70 per cent of all their internet searches on Google. Users of Microsoft and Yahoo! search, by contrast, only used those search engines 33 per cent of the time, using a combination of other search services, such as Google, the rest of the time.

Taiwan Wildlife Survey Database Query System

With a unique natural geographic environment, there is rich flora and fauna in Taiwan and the abundant species and high density are renowned over the world. Influenced by long geographical isolation, the proportion of endemic species has increased. For example, there are currently around 4200 different vascular plant species recorded in Taiwan, 27% of which are endemic species, and around 18,500 wild animal species (including mammals, birds, Amphibias, Reptilias, fresh water fish, butterflies and other insects) have also been recorded, of them over 60% are endemic species. Whether for academic research, resource conservation and utilization or even international tourism, the abundant animal and plant resources as well as the high ratio of endemic species are all of very high value.

Taiwan Wildlife Survey Database Query System

"Taiwan endemic species" refers to the species that are bred or distributed in the local area only. Endemic species compose the most important part of Taiwan’s natural and cultural sceneries and also flora and fauna resources, even its existence and growth is closely bounded to the ecosystem integrity of Taiwan. For a long time, we have had insufficient basic survey and research about the native creature, which might have caused a serious effect on studying flora and fauna distribution, group volume, living pressure, rehabilitation and native ecology education of Taiwan’s endemic and rare species. As a result, to systemically build up a survey database and an effective educational guidance, this project was drawn up by the Endemic Species Research Institute Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan.

The goals of the system

The system is expected to effectively and accurately attain the local flora and fauna data and systematically create an Internet geographic database with surveyed samples and distribution data of wild flora and fauna through back-end data processing, so that it can satisfy the need of filing management and achieve the goal of integrating wild flora and fauna data. This system can make a solid foundation for the Endemic Species Research Institute’s data storage center and can benefit the institute’s future constructions, planning and managements.

The results of the system

Flora and fauna data query website is the key structure for the system. It is a querying website that integrates all domestic flora and fauna databases; furthermore, with WebGIS technology, the Internet GIS function allows the general users to query data through the Internet. Other than general online query, to cope with the business demands of the units in charge, the limited data uploading and managing functions are provided so that maintenance and update of data could be made with authority.

The Taiwan Wildlife Survey Database Query System interface

The system development can be divided into four categories:System Function Development, Data Integration, WebGIS Enhancement and Educational Training.

1. System Function Development:

* Query species:On the species query list, a query interface is added so that users can search the map for a specific town or country where the species is distributed.

* Enhanced photography upload:When users upload photos, the system will record the photos’ information, such as photographer and the shooting time.

* Statistics:A statistic table of the species distribution at a specific area can be displayed.

* Presents species diversity analysis results of the surveyed data.

2. Data Integration:

* Created a data integration mechanism for field survey units to upload data. This system is used as the entrance port for querying species query and integrating the survey data collected from units to extend the contents of this database.

3. WebGIS Enhancement:

* Integrate related spatial data, such as satellite images and various kinds of vector maps.

* Integrate aerial images:The system integrates the aerial images with the WebGIS query interface for users to have an overview about the species habitat.

4. Educational Training:

* Course contents:Educational training and technology transfer are aimed at assisting users to manipulate the system easily. The user manual provided by this project allows the persons in charge to be familiar with the system quickly and can be used as a system guidance.

The Taiwan Wildlife Survey Database Query System integrates aerial images.

Samsung introduces CL65 wireless GPS camera - digital camera and photography newsCapture and Share Precious Moments On-the-Go with Built-In Wireless Connectivity

Samsung Electronics America, Inc., today unveiled the CL65, featuring built-in geo-tagging, Bluetooth 2.0, DLNA compatibility, and Wi-Fi* connectivity. With the new CL65, users can make a true visual connection with their family and friends by quickly and easily sharing photo memories and moments while on-the-move.

Packed full of innovation and encased in a sleek compact frame, the CL65 offers the unprecedented combination of geo-tagging, Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi, and DLNA compatibility. The geo-tagging capability allows users to keep track of where they've traveled, while DLNA compatibility and Wi-Fi connectivity enable users to send and share pictures almost as quickly as they take them. The CL65 is a great way to keep your network of friends and family in the know.

Thanks to the built-in geo-tagging capability, the CL65 displays the city on the camera's LCD screen, providing users with a display of the location where they're taking a photo, as well as a reference for when they are reviewing and managing images. With the embedded PC software package ‘intelli-studio', users can also easily view, edit and manage their pictures right on the camera before uploading them to popular photo-sharing sites, such as PicasaTM.

Using Bluetooth 2.0 technology, users can wirelessly beam their favorite images to other compatible devices. Using a Wi-Fi connection, users can now email photos directly from their camera and upload them to popular social networking sites. The CL65 also offers DLNA connectivity, allowing users to wirelessly connect to other DLNA compatible devices within their networked home, such as an HDTV, to view and share their images.

The CL65 sports a 3.5″ wide touch-screen LCD. With a resolution of 1,152K, almost four times more than traditional cameras, the CL65's advanced display provides users with an enhanced viewing experience. The CL65 also incorporates Samsung's Smart Gesture User Interface. With a simple tilt, users can now easily access key features such as Smart Auto, movie, and program mode.

The CL65 comes with a 12.2 megapixel CCD and a high-quality, 35mm Schneider- KREUZNACH lens. Offering a powerful internal 5x optical zoom, the CL65's lens produces clean and clear images with balanced resolution from the center of images to the edges. Alongside professional‑grade photos, the CL65 records 720p HD video at 30 frames-per-second in H.264 format, giving twice as much recording capacity as MPEG4 format, and four times more than MJPEG format, all in the palm of your hand. HDMI connectivity means that your HD videos can be enjoyed on any HDTV or HD Monitor.

Additionally, the camera's touch-screen user interface provides users with Samsung's innovative and intuitive One Touch Auto Focus system. This puts complete command of the camera's focusing system right in the hands of the photographer, allowing the user to pinpoint the exact area to lock focus on by simply touching the location on the LCD screen. Users can also automatically trigger the camera to then take the image by continuing to hold the location with their fingertip.

“The CL65 is all about spreading the joy everywhere from anywhere,” said Sang Jin Park, CEO, Samsung Digital Imaging Co. Ltd. “Never before has a manufacturer provided such a range of technologies in a compact digital camera, giving consumers unprecedented flexibility when it comes to how, when, and where they share their digital images. Geo-tagging keeps track of where the photographer has been, allowing them to quickly and easily share content with their network, while Bluetooth 2.0 and Wi-Fi capabilities allow for the simplest of uploads without needing a computer. This new powerhouse point-and-shoot camera will raise the bar for innovation and set a new standard by which all other manufacturers will be measured.”

CL65 SPECIFICATIONS

Wireless Connectivity

Geo-Tagging

The CL65 utilizes GPS technology to automatically geo-tag digital images, recording the latitude and longitude of where in the world each photo is taken. The location data is automatically embedded into each image's EXIF file. Photo-sharing websites such as PicasaTM provide options for sharing one's images on a map of the world and can utilize the information stored in the image's EXIF file to pinpoint where the photo was taken.

The CL65 will display the name of the city on the camera's LCD screen, providing users with a display of the location where they're taking a photo, as well as a handy reference for when they are reviewing images on the camera's LCD screen.

Bluetooth 2.0

Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity is also included, allowing users to share and transfer photos wirelessly and seamlessly. Using Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, you can beam your favorite digital images from the CL65 directly to compatible devices, such as mobile phones. When using Bluetooth 2.0, the CL65 will automatically resize the digital image to best fit the resolution of the host screen it will be displayed on.

Wi-Fi and DLNA

The CL65 is DLNA compliant (Digital Living Network Alliance), allowing the camera to wirelessly connect to other DLNA compliant devices, such as HDTVs. This gives the CL65 user the ability to move content from their camera to other consumer electronics devices throughout their home. To maximize speed and efficiency, all images transferred through Wi-Fi will be reduced to a resolution of two mega-pixels.

The CL65 makes it easy for users to upload or share their digital images with others right from their digital camera. Through Wi-Fi, users can send a digital image to any email address stored in your camera's address book or by using the camera's touch-screen QWERTY keypad. The CL65's Wi-Fi connection also allows users to upload their images directly to popular websites such as Facebook®, PicasaTM and YouTube®.

Casio launches intelligent EXILIM EX-Z450 and EX-Z90

Casio announces the new EX-Z450 and EX-Z90 digital cameras, both equipped with Intelligent AF, a new function that can detect even a non-human photographic subject. So when you're taking a picture of a pet or even scenery, Intelligent AF can help minimize the number of photos that have an out-of-focus subject. The EX-Z450 features 12 megapixels, a wide-angle 28 mm 4x optical zoom lens, and a 3-inch LCD display. The EX-Z90 offers 12 megapixels too, but comes with a 3x optical zoom lens and a 2.7-inch LCD display...

PRESS SUMMARY

Casio launches intelligent EXILIM EX-Z450 and EX-Z90 - digital camera and photography newsCasio Releases EXILIM Digital Cameras that Automatically Detect Photo Subjects with New Intelligent AF - Enhancing the Fun of Creating Composite Moving Images with Improved Dynamic Photo

Casio Computer Co., Ltd., today announced the addition of two new models to the EXILIM® digital camera lineup, the EXILIM Zoom EX-Z450 and EXILIM Zoom EX-Z90. Both are equipped with Intelligent AF, a new function that can detect even a non-human photographic subject, which means it automatically determines the focus and exposure area. The new models also come with a CD-ROM containing graphics that can be used with Dynamic Photo™, a unique function for creating composite moving images. With the graphics and Dynamic Photo, users can easily create fun and dynamic images for animated electronic greeting cards and other purposes.

Intelligent AF automatically detects the intended subject
In addition to usual face detection, just by pointing the camera at a desired shot, Intelligent AF automatically detects non-human photo subjects in the whole composition and determines the focus and exposure area. So when taking a picture of a pet or even scenery, Intelligent AF can help minimize the number of photos that have an out-of-focus subject, thanks to the high-speed image processing technology and image analysis technology of the EXILIM Engine 4.0.

Dynamic Photo expands the possibilities for easy and fun image creation
Further advancements have been achieved for Dynamic Photo, which enables users to cut out images of a moving subject and combine them with a different still image. In the past, it was necessary to take photos twice*1 in order to cut out the moving subject, but now a moving subject can be cropped from a single shooting, as long as the background is flat and in one color. The new EXILIM models come with a CD-ROM containing a selection of more than 150 types*2 of graphics, including Animated Characters such as a cake or a firecracker. These can be added to still images, ideal for the creation of animated electronic greeting cards. The CD-ROM also contains the Dynamic Photo Manager software for PCs, which enables users to easily attach composite moving images to emails. Dynamic Photo offers endless possibilities for touching the hearts of family and friends.

*1. Capturing separate photos with and without the subject, while keeping the camera in the same position.
*2. Including still and moving graphics

Casio EX-Z450
This stylish model is a 12.1 effective megapixel digital camera boasting a wide-angle 28 mm 4X optical zoom lens (35 mm film camera equivalent). In addition to a CCD-shift image stabilization mechanism, the EX-Z450 features a Landscape Mode for taking more beautiful scenery shots, and a Makeup Mode that enhances the beauty of human faces.

Casio EX-Z90
With an effective resolution of 12.1 megapixels and a 3X optical zoom lens, the EX-Z90 offers advanced base performance and a wide range of functions. Compact enough to fit into the palm of a hand, the EX-Z90 has been designed to feel like a fashion accessory.

BT upgrades broadband speeds- news

BT has pushed the big red "upgrade" button on all its subscribers accounts, pumping up pipes to 20Mb/s in "enabled areas". Those areas cover, according to the company, 40% of the UK's homes and businesses.

Up till now, customers were stuck on 8Mb/s speeds, slower than many of BT's competitors. The company is now matching most of its competition, though Virgin Media offers a 50 Mb/s option. Upload speeds are increasing too, going from 448Kb/s to 1Mb/s. That'll help people with tasks like putting video on YouTube, online gaming and sending large emails.

Lastly, BT's also releasing a little gadget that reduces the impact of electrical interference on broadband lines. The company says that the BT Broadband Accelerator could improve line speeds by as much as 1.5Mb/s, because one of the main causes of slow net connections is home wiring.

Speed upgrades for customers will be available on the BT site shortly and you won't pay any extra for it, though sneakily you'll need to sign a new contract to get access. The Broadband Accelerator is free to anyone who wants it, though you'll need to pay postage.

RealNetworks RealPlayer SP - PC - a tiddy media solution!

If you were to use the words "software", "audio player" and "bloated" in the same sentence amidst a crowd of audio-aficionados, nine of out then of them would assume that you’re referring to RealPlayer. Real Media hasn’t had the best of press over the years and most of this is its own doing.

A persistence in polluting products with annoying third-party add-ons, continual reminders of how to spend more money in associated online stores and the symbiotic way at which it attaches itself to all facets of your operating system stands in stark contrast to the streamlined nature of some rivals, and has undoubtedly cost Real Media a good deal of business.

With the release of RealPlayer SP it attempts to win back some customers by offering genuinely useful features that will appeal to the modern media generation. The free version of the software headlines with the ability to download and convert non copy-protected video from sites such as YouTube and quickly convert them to a range of formats for viewing on handhelds, games consoles and other devices.

A full subscription adds H.264 support, more detailed control over video conversion and the ability to burn DVDs. Other additions here include crossfade mixing effects, CD burning up to 320kbps and advanced audio controls for converting from vinyl and tape, though in truth it’s the video downloading that should hold the biggest appeal.

The new features actually work pretty well and provided the particular content you want to convert is not copy-protected, a "Download this video" link will appear above a window either through RealPlayer’s built-in web browser or a standalone application. Files can be converted right away or by selecting content from the library, at which point a choice of formats (e.g., Apple iPod, Xbox 360, BlackBerry) are available with pre-built profiles, along with the option to customise the conversion with your own settings. A nice touch here is the ability to convert for multiple devices at the same time, though you are fairly limited in selectable formats and sadly Real enforces its RealVideo standard or Windows Media (rather than AVI, DivX or a more generic format) as the only options for playback on a PC.

Conversion is quick and easy and we have no complaints about the structure taken to offering this service, but with free resources available online to do much the same, it may not hold enough appeal in itself.

Those willing to upgrade to the full version will benefit from H.264 conversion, DVD burning and the other features listed above, and again we were pleased at how well this integrates and at the tidy way in which the package offers what are a wide range of features in an approachable fashion. The software generally seems more streamlined and less hassle than in previous years, which will be good news to anyone who is already a fan of Real Media.

Unfortunately this is also where we think the package falls down. The insistence in forcing a proprietary format and the omission of many convenient, commonly used alternatives could be Real’s undoing here, and for this reason it is unlikely to offer enough to reel in new users or those who have turned their nose up at the company in the past.

RealPlayer SP is very nice to use and integrates the various components available beautifully, but while these do work very well, savvy users will argue that free alternatives that don’t tie them to RealMedia formats are available elsewhere.

However, even though the free version does omit H.264, novices may appreciate the ability to download and convert video for use on handhelds and loyal followers will undoubtedly be pleased with the benefits available on this new version.

Twitter spam could force us to abandon replies

Today I experienced my first real moment of Twitter spam.

No I am not talking about a bunch of followers inflating my follow numbers, but actually direct spam comments via the replies panel.

The quick and rather fire hose mentally of the tweets - admittedly currently only 5 in around 5 seconds shows how venerable the system is and how, if spammers gain control, the replies system could have to be abandoned completely.

It is a shame because the replies system is useful. For one, it allows me to comment on other peoples streams, start new friendships and basically be "social", however what happens when this is filled with adverts for porn, drugs and penis enlargement options?

Twitter has said that it is working on the replies element to the site making it more formal and possible allowing you to see more replies with in the streams however this move could compound the problem with further.

It will be a sad day if that happens, but I worry the spammers are coming.

The question is, can Twitter stop the flood?

Freeze Your Buns with the New Frigidaire Gallery Freezer

It can be hard to write a product review of a freezer in the middle of winter. The last thing you want to think about is keeping things cold. Fortunately, our editorial offices are in Beverly Hills, California where we’ve been blessed with 70 degree weather since December. So it might be winter, but ice cream is still on the menu. We’ve been fortunate to have the new Frigidaire freezer model GLFH21F8H in house for testing for the past couple of months.

The freezer we tested is a clean white upright model with just under 21 cubic feet of interior space. It is wrapped in a simple white enameled, textured steel with a sleek, low profile handle. The freezer sports a digital display with a control panel on the door front. In these days of cheap slapdash construction and assembly, it’s nice to see a product with solid fit and finish. It has no rough edges, nice square joins at the corners, a door that hangs well and moves smoothly on its hinges. The workmanship hints at decent quality control in manufacturing. While you could certainly put it in your garage, it would look fine in your kitchen.

Inside the freezer, you have clear visibility and access to the stored contents. The interior is well lit, with clear glass shelves that neither frost nor fog up. The storage system includes two fixed height, full size glass shelves and one adjustable glass shelf. You also get three full size pull out baskets and low profile slideout “Pizza Shelf” hanging beneath the top glass shelf. The storage system gives you a lot of variety for flexible storage. The pizza shelf is a great little addition. We generally use the top couple of inches in any shelf space to slide in pizzas, pies etc. and let them perch precariously on the tops of whatever is sitting on the shelf. In the Frigidaire Gallery Freezer, they’ve grabbed that extra air space and hung a nice flat slideout bonus shelf.

One of our favorite touches with the Frigidaire Gallery Freezer is the collection of movable spacers. These small vertical plastic dividers snap onto the back of the glass shelves and provide support and defined space. They allow neat stacking, and in our test freezer serve to keep bags of frozen fruit and vegetables from toppling onto each other. The flexible space control is carried over into the wire bins as well. Each bin comes with a twist in adjustable internal divider. Anchored by the drawer’s wire framing it can stand up to the pressure of a full load in a packed drawer.

The freezer door has five adjustable height bins in two columns on the top half of the door. Each bin is about 10 inches wide by 5 inches deep and can easily hold two half gallons of Ice Cream (French Vanilla or Fudge Tracks are highly recommended by this editor.) The bottom of the door is a full width wire bin that rocks out. We’ve been using it to store 5 pound bags of flour we’ll be using in an upcoming review of mixers and bread machines. The middle of the door has a second full length bin, and one of the Gallery’s signature features: a distinct full width closed shelf set aside as a soft freeze zone - ideal for ice cream. Our only complaint is that its scaled for pints, and when we want ice cream we can polish it off in half gallon doses.

While we found the storage system of the Frigidaire to be well conceived and implemented, one issue to keep in mind is that space efficiency is lost when you replace shelves with drawers. Each drawer needs clearance on all sides to allow easy motion, and that margin space is effectively removed from use as storage. In the case of the bottom drawer, the seven inch clearance just isn’t enough to make a satisfactory bread drawer, and we had less effective capacity than in another 20 cubic foot freezer.

An interesting feature set of the Frigidaire Gallery Freezer (GLFH21F8H) as tested, is the digital display panel on the door front. The display gives a digital readout of the current temperature and allows you to exactly set how you want the freezer to cool. The feature we found most impressive though were the alarms and warnings available on the front panel. On one rainy day, when we lost power repeatedly at our offices, I wasn’t particularly surprised when I checked the freezer to see the lost power indicator verifying that the freezer had lost power at least once that day. I was pleased to see that the high temperature indicator made it clear that the freezer never warmed up to a range that might cause the food to spoil. If the freezer had warmed during a lengthy outage, I would have been warned by the display that I had an issue. Living in a family of forgetful, and slightly negligent kids and dads, the idea of an alarm that will alert you when the door is left open also appeals to me.

As part of our test, we also made it a point to call anonymously into Frigidaire’s consumer support hotline. We found their tech support team knowledgable, friendly, helpful and generous. They were quick to respond and quick to offer solutions to whatever we asked about. Overall, we’ve found the Frigidaire Gallery Freezer to be a solid, well conceived appliance and would be pleased to recommend it to our readers.

MicroFridge-Sized and Designed for the Dorm Room

MicroFridge, the industry leader in compact specialty appliances, today introduced the next generation in small space convenience. The new product line includes patent-pending Safe Plug® technology and also features a Dual Outlet Charge Station that enables people to safely and conveniently charge a range of popular electronic devices such as laptop computers, MP3 players, cell phones, digital cameras and more.

Combining a spacious refrigerator, freezer and microwave in a single unit, a MicroFridge appliance is perfect wherever space is limited and there’s a need for food and refreshments – including hotels, college residence halls, assisted living residences, military housing, offices and at home too. The compact MicroFridge refrigerator features over two cubic feet of storage space, while the separate freezer boasts a 0.75 cubic foot capacity. For food preparation, there is a fully programmable 700-watt microwave oven. The refrigerator’s Smart Store Door allows the upright storage of two-liter bottles or half-gallon containers to eliminate leaks and spills that can result when storing tall containers on their side. And the roomy zero-degree freezer ensures that items like ice cream stay perfectly frozen.

The microwave features three, distinct “Express Cook” settings, along with pre-programmed recipes for soup, beverages, pizza and popcorn; the beeper volume is adjustable and can also be set to mute. The patent–pending Safe Plug power management system technology is another feature that makes MicroFridge truly unique, automatically shutting off the refrigerator and charging station when the microwave is on, limiting the maximum electrical draw of the unit to just 11 amps.
“This reduces utility expenses and is good for the environment,” said Jim Russo, Vice President Product Sales of Intirion Corporation – the makers of MicroFridge. “Traditional refrigerators and microwaves can pull nearly twice that amount, potentially overloading electrical systems and creating costly problems.”
MicroFridge’s Safe Plug technology also enables users to operate both the refrigerator and microwave utilizing only one electrical socket. The blue plug on the refrigerator unit plugs into the back of the microwave with only the microwave plug required to power the unit. This oneplug-to-the-wall operation saves valuable outlet space as well.
The new Dual Outlet Charge Station makes MicroFridge the only company to offer this design and technology, providing exceptional convenience to safely charge personal electronics. Located in the front of the microwave, busy consumers can power up their laptops, MP3 players, cell phones, digital cameras, or any device that draws four amps of power or less. This eliminates the need to reach into inaccessible places to plug and unplug devices that require charging. And the integrated Cord Clip prevents cables from getting tangled or caught in the doors of the fridge or freezer while the Dual Outlet Charge Station is in use.

MicroFridge is ENERGY STAR rated and has achieved the highest rating for energy efficiency: CEE Tier 3 status. In addition, the Safe Plug technology further enhances the products’ energysaving benefit by temporarily shutting off the refrigerator when the microwave is in use.

Price and Availability
The MicroFridge combination appliance is used by college students across the U.S., and is also found in hotel and motel rooms, assisted living residences and on U.S. military bases. Models are available in classic black, white and stainless steel. The MicroFridge 2.9MF-7TP model combination appliance retails for $425.00 (35041.25 PKR) and is available for purchase, along with other models, direct from the manufacturer online at www.microfridge.com.

Samsung’s Latest Includes New Induction Range - Lower Laundry Pricing

Samsung Electronics America will add induction technology to its cooking appliance line this fall.

Details are sketchy, but the company said the freestanding model will be produced entirely in-house.

“It’s gorgeous,” said James Politeski, sales and marketing VP for Samsung digital appliances. “The controls are intuitive, more accessible and very cool.”

Joining the induction unit will be Samsung’s first gas-fueled ranges. Two models are also set to ship this fall, along with a $600 speed oven that features microwave and electric heating.

In laundry, Samsung has added a step between its opening price point $999 front-load washer and its $1,499 front-load steam washer. The new, Energy Star-rated WF419 (suggested retail $1,199) also features steam cycles and Samsung’s vibration-reduction technology (VRT), plus 4.3 cubic feet of capacity and a diamond-patterned drum surface that’s gentler on fabrics.

Samsung also lowered its opening price point in front-load laundry to $699 in a Lowe’s-exclusive model that could join the open line next year depending on marketplace conditions. Senior marketing manager Jeffrey Armstrong said the company is hesitant to play in the promotional arena after establishing Samsung as a premium appliance brand — a strategy that has paid off with a 100 percent increase in first-quarter laundry sales.

In refrigeration, Samsung showed three French door models with dual ice makers, a feature it described as an industry first. The dual system includes an external filtered water and ice dispenser in the refrigerator and an additional ice maker in the freezer to provide twice the ice-making ability of standard units.

Century Matchless Deluxe Stainless Steel 2-Burner Stove

Best camping stove for families

Good value for campground use
Windscreens on three sides
Lightweight (12.5 pounds)
Easy to clean

Mixed reliability on self-ignition
Better on high than low
Mixed reviews for build quality

The best plug for the Century Matchless camping stove is in a review at Camping Life Magazine, and we found user ratings for the Century camping stove scattered at several websites, including REI.com and Epinions.com.

The Century Matchless Deluxe stove is made of rustproof stainless steel and aluminum. The foldout windscreens shield the cooking area, and the stove uses standard one-liter bottles of propane fuel (you can use a full-size tank with an adapter). The two burners are set further apart than on most competing camping stoves, so it's easier to use a large pan or griddle. You can find much fancier camp stoves, but most reviewers say the Century Matchless is a good value. We did read a few reports that the push-button ignition can be finicky. If you don't need a family stove, the JetBoil PCS (*est. $80) gets the best reviews as a small camping stove, but it's meant for boiling rather than cooking.
